MCMC Telcos Parental Control Tools collaboration

Comms minister Fahmi Fadzil has informed Dewan Rakyat today that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is collaborating with five major telcos to introduce Parental Control Tools. This initiative aims to help parents monitor and manage their children’s online activities.

Fahmi’s statement came as a reply to a question posed by Kamal Ashaari (PN-Kuala Krau) on the ministry’s method to ensure that those under the age of 15 are banned from having social media accounts, with the intention of preventing them from following bad trends. According to him, the Parental Control Tools will provide parents with the ability to filter, limit and even block online content viewed by their children.

“Most social media platforms also have age restrictions for user accounts, allowing only those aged 13 and above to open accounts,” the comms minister said. “To ensure compliance with these requirements, parents or guardians are held responsible for monitoring and supervising their children’s online activities.”

Fahmi reveals that the five aforementioned telcos include CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, Telekom Malaysia (TM), and TIME. However, he did not mention when the Parental Control Tools are expected to be introduced, but noted that parents can still use any existing tools available on other platforms.
