Maxis Is Now Offering 10Mbps Home Broadband at RM 119, 30Mbps Goes for RM 139

0

Starting from today onwards, Maxis is now offering its 10Mbps Home Broadband plan for RM 119 per month. In addition to that, users can also opt for 30Mbps which can now be obtained for RM 139.

As a comparison, these plans were previously being offered at RM 139 and RM 179 respectively. However, the monthly prices for 50Mbps and 100Mbps remained the same, as shown in this table:

That being said, these new pricings are not meant to last forever though. As it turns out, they will only last for 24 months and this is pointed out in the FAQ section of the product page as well as Maxis’ TnC section:

MaxisONE Home Broadband Year End Sale

Once that period is over, customers will be charged at the normal rate once again. This  is similar to what TM has done recently through the leaked Bonanza Campaign as well as its UniFi Edu and eBiz packs.

Meanwhile, do take note the promotional price for 10Mbps plan is only available for new users while the 30Mbps plan can be obtained by existing MaxisONE Home Broadband customers that are already out of contract. Customers are able to sign up for them until 31 December 2017.

MaxisONE Prime Now Comes with 50Mbps Home Broadband At The Price of 30Mbps

Launched earlier last month, MaxisONE Prime is generally a combination of the telco’s mobile and Home Broadband offerings in one single plan that comes complete with unlimited mobile data, calls, and SMS. Now, the telco is offering MaxisONE Prime base plan with faster Home Broadband’s speed.

Instead of providing 30Mbps for RM 367 per month, MaxisONE Prime is now being offered with 50Mbps at the same price. Prior to this, customers that want to have 50Mbps Home Broadband will have to pay RM 407 for their MaxisONE Prime plan.

Just like the stand-alone Home Broadband promo that Maxis unveiled yesterday, there is one big catch though: the 50Mbps promo is only applicable for 24 months. While Maxis might not clearly state in the plan’s FAQ or Terms and Conditions document, we assume that the fees will be reverted back to RM 407 once the 24-months period is over.

As for other elements within MaxisONE Prime plan, they remain the same as per last month’s launch. To know more about the all-in-one plan, head on to the telco’s official website.

Maxis has announced a new Hotlink Red prepaid pack. While the name remains the same, Maxis has tweaked the basic offerings available to new prepaid users; providing what it believes is the best for those just adopting mobile internet.

The RM10 Hotlink Red pack includes RM5 of preloaded airtime, 300MB mobile data, and 10GB high-speed data dedicated solely for Facebook. It’s a prepaid subscription, so there’s not much else to mention at this point.

Maxis has also revamped its mobile prepaid internet passes for the release of the new prepaid offering. The restructured “data plans” offer a choice between free zero-rated mobile chat (Line, WeChat, WhatsApp) and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Pinterest).

Existing Hotlink users can also opt into the new Red subscription through the Hotlink RED App, by going to ‘My Account’ and selecting ‘Change’ next to ‘Rateplan’; or by dialing *100*6*1#.

Unleash the ‘Huat’ With Maxis’ HuatAR App

Maxis is seeking to reimagine the way the lion dance is experience via its new augmented reality app, which they have very conveniently called – you guessed it – the Maxis HuatAR app.

“At Maxis, we believe that this auspicious season and its positive symbols should be shared with as many people as possible. With the HuatAR campaign, we are turning the lion dance, commonly representing good fortune and prosperity, into an accessible experience with the power of technology. Using augmented reality – or AR, in short – customers can now usher in the Chinese New Year in a truly innovative and entertaining way,” said Tai Kam Leong, Head of Brand and Partnerships.

Maxis users will need to own some of these unique and special Maxis ang paos, which are obtained whenever they make a purchase at any Maxis Centre or Maxis Exclusive Partners (MEPs) outlet. To be clear, you can’t outright buy the ang paos, and you’ll only receive them upon signing up for any package that the telco has to offer (e.g. a new MaxisONE plan, MaxisONE Broadband, etc.).

Once you’ve gotten the red packet, simply complete the following steps:

  1. Scan the QR code located on the flap to download the HuatAR app on Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Alternatively, you can go to www.maxis.com.my/HuatAR.
  2. Install and open the HuatAR app and scan the front of the ang pao.
  3. Ah Huat is immediately brought to life on your mobile screen.

At current, the app only seems to be available for the Android OS. The embedded video also has a short video tutorial, that starts from the 1:10 marker. We recommend watching the entire video anyway, because of the pure comedy that comes from interviewing a pantomime lion.

MCMC Network Performance Report 2017: TM Doesn’t Fully Meet The Standard For Wired Broadband

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) earlier this week released the Network Performance Report for 2017. This particular report covered a number of topics including the performance of wired broadband in our country through DSL and fiber networks that belonged to TM, Maxis, and Time.

Based on the network tests throughout the country from January to December 2017, the regulatory agency stated that all of the ISPs above managed to meet the throughput (download and upload speed) standard that the agency has imposed on them. For DSL, it has to be at least 70% of the subscribed speed for 90% of the time, while fiber throughput must be 90% of the subscribed speed under the same duration.

Streamyx Rebrand To UniFi
TM’s Streamyx DSL service was rebranded to Broadband last year.

However, TM’s DSL service didn’t meet the standard for latency and packet loss as well as the latency standard for its fiber service. According to MCMC’s requirement, the network latency has to be equal to or less than 85ms for at least 95% of the time while the maximum rate of packet loss is 1%.

The agency further noted that Maxis fiber service failed for the Central region to meet the latency standard but then again, the fiber network that the company utilized was actually leased from TM. Here is the breakdown of the overall test results for wired broadband as provided by MCMC:

MCMC Network Performance Report 2017: DSL and Fiber Wired Broadband

MCMC has noted that latency and packet loss issues are certainly something that the ISPs need to work on. In another set of charts which are based on speed subscribed by users, the agency pointed that DSL services were not able to meet MCMC’s latency standard at all, while only fiber packages with speeds of 20 to 29 Mbps as well as 100 Mbps and above managed to comply with the standard.

The situation is not that bad when it comes to packet loss but DSL customers with 1 to 2 Mbps and 5 to 9 Mbps packages are facing more than 1% of packet loss rate. Fiber services on another hand are well within MCMC’s standard:

MCMC Network Performance Report 2017: Latency and Packet Loss for DSL

MCMC Network Performance Report 2017: Latency and Packet Loss for Fiber

MCMC has also noted in its report that certain TM customers have experienced a drop in terms of internet experience after the company begun to offer free upgrades ast year. Additionally, the agency also stated that rural areas might be facing poor latency on their DSL services if their home is more than 1km away from the Access Node.

Despite all these shortcomings, TM still received positive notes inside the report on several fronts. It includes having the best throughput among all fiber providers,  alongside its effort to help users better understand the Wi-Fi network condition in their house – and the Wi-Fi technology itself – through the company’s Wi-Fi Analyzer App.

TM UniFi
New year, new mission for UniFi.

Meanwhile, MCMC has stated in the report that the agency is likely to issue a penalty to ISPs for not meeting the agency’s mandatory standards. It didn’t elaborate further on that matter though but nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how these ISPs react to this report as well as actions taken by MCMC in the near future.

Celcom, Digi, and Maxis Fork Out RM 355 Million To Renew 2100MHz License

Three of the main telcos in Malaysia including Celcom, Digi, and Maxis have recently renewed their rights with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to utilize the 2100MHz spectrum. Mainly being used for 3G services, this gives them the right to the spectrum for another 16 years starting from 2 April 2018.

According to the announcements that they filed to Bursa Malaysia, each of these telcos were required to make a payment of RM 118.4 million each to MCMC which equals to RM 355.2 million in total. Additionally, they also have to pay additional RM 50 million per year throughout the assignment period.

MCMC Tower 1 Cyberjaya

As for U Mobile who also owns a license to operate within the 2100MHz spectrum, its license will only expire on 1 March 2027. Hence, that is why the company didn’t release any statement related to the topic.

Given the amount mentioned above, the spectrum bands are clearly quite valuable to the country. This goes hand in hand with what we have learned from the 700MHz spectrum assignment last year.

For the longest time, Hotlink has always been known for its prepaid plans but things have changed today. Just moments ago, Maxis has officially unveiled the first ever postpaid plan under Hotlink which sounds rather odd indeed.

Called Hotlink Postpaid Flex, it is apparently conceived to provide the flexibility of prepaid and the convenience of postpaid in one package. For starters, the new Hotlink Postpaid Flex starts at RM 30 per month which provides unlimited calls and SMS to customers as well as 1GB of Internet data.

The flexibility part comes in the form of the Internet bundles which are available in the form of Unlimited Social, Unlimited Music, and Unlimited Chat. As pointed by their name, these packs allows customers to utilize the apps that are listed in each of them without the need to worry of their data usages.

Hotlink Postpaid Flex

Priced at RM 10 per month each for Unlimited Social and Unlimited Music as well as RM 5 per month for Unlimited Chat, customers can choose to change the bundles at any given time without any penalty.

Additionally, customers can choose to have additional 5GB of Internet monthly data for RM 25 per month which will self-refresh every month. There are also other Internet passes such as 5GB for RM 30, 1GB for RM 10, and 1-day 1GB pass for RM 5 that users can choose if they need even more data.

Hotlink Postpaid Flex

Since this is indeed a true postpaid plan, customers will indeed receive a monthly bill and they not able to use Hotlink top-up cards to pay for the plan. To learn more about the first ever postpaid plan under Hotlink or even sign up for it, head on to the Hotlink Postpaid Flex’s official website.

Telcos in Malaysia have already begun promoting their pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The two new models are slated to be released in the Malaysian market on 16 March 2018, although preorder customers will be able to pick their devices up a whole week ahead of the official release.

Telco players teased consumers with bite size details of how they can get their hands on this anticipated release. The pre-order starts from 1st to 4th March 2018 and, as an added bonus, pre-order customers will receive a Harman Kardon Onyx Mini Bluetooth speaker worth RM699 (while stocks last).

Digi

One of the first telcos to tease the pre-order yesterday, Digi’s pre-order starts from RM2,899 for the Galaxy S9 and RM3,489 for the Galaxy S9+.

Maxis

Samsung fans and Maxis customers can rejoice as the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are made available under its popular Zerolution postpaid offering – advertising a zero cash upfront. That said, users can also purchase the devices via normal contract as well.

If you’re looking for the lowest device price, look no further than U Mobile. Under its Ultimate Device postpaid plans, the devices prices are going for as low as RM1,819 and RM2,859 for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ respectively. Do note that U Mobile has a higher advance payment, which will go towards your monthly bill. That said, this charge will be waived for auto debit subscribers.

Celcom

Celcom announced its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ offering in the wee hours of 1st March. The Facebook post revealed that the devices will be available under its EasyPhone plan, where Celcom users can expect to pay from as low as RM95 per month.

The programme allows users to go on a 24-month instalment plan. The only catch is that you would need to visit the nearest Blue Cube or selected Celcom certified partners to sign-up. Despite its name, the programme is actually quite complex – warranting the need to go to an actual outlet. Additionally, EasyPhone customers must stay in contract with the telco for 24 months.

Moreover, for new customers and those who have been with Celcom for less than 12 months, there is an upfront payment of three months x EasyPhone monthly fee. This will be waived if you’ve been with the telco for more than a year.

Maxis Brings Back Zerolution Option For All iPhone Models

Less than six months after discontinuing the iPhone from its Zerolution program, Maxis is reinstating the plan for all iPhone models available from the telco. This new iPhone Zerolution program includes the iPhone 7/7 Plus, iPhone 8/8 Plus, and the iPhone X.

Where other Zerolution plans don’t require you to sign up with a credit card and applications can be done online, the iPhone Zerolution plans now require both. You must have a valid credit card to apply, and you can only do so at a physical Maxis store.

Existing Maxis Zerolution customers who have opted for the annual upgrade will be able to change to the iPhone upon reaching their upgrade anniversary. Unfortunately, this new iPhone Zerolution plan doesn’t come with an annual upgrade offer. This essentially means you will not be able to upgrade your smartphone after 12 months of the 24-month iPhone Zerolution contract.

Those appear to be the only two differences for the new iPhone Zerolution plan. Depending on the iPhone model, you can opt for different MaxisONE plans. Here’s the breakdown:

Maxis Offers Free Samsung Galaxy S8 When You Sign Up For A Galaxy S9 Or S9+ Contract

$

With the official arrival of Samsung latest flagships in Malaysia, local telcos have begun offering the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ devices on their respective postpaid contracts. Today, Maxis has upped the ante with a new promo, offering the Galaxy S8 for free for every eligible Galaxy S9/S9+ plan.

The promotion applies only to those who purchase either the Galaxy S9 or S9+ under the MaxisONE Plan 188, along with a new MaxisONE Share 48 supplementary plan. This criteria is pretty steep, but considering the value of the Galaxy S8, it might be worth it for some customers.

Interestingly, there is no device subsidy for the MaxisONE Plan 188 for both the Galaxy S9 64GB and Galaxy S9+ 128GB under this promotion. Unlike the MaxisONE Plan 158 and 128, where the device subsidy is between RM600 to RM1000 for the two devices, customers who opt for the MaxisONE Plan 188 will have to pay full price for the Galaxy S9 or S9+. That said, the Galaxy S8 has a retail price of RM2699 – perhaps Maxis has priced this into the overall value of the plan.

Samsung Galaxy S9

Samsung Galaxy S9+

As with the other device contracts, there are no differences to the MaxisONE Plans for the Galaxy S9 and S9+. The MaxisONE Plan 188 comes with 60GB all day data, as well as unlimited free calls and texts. Customers will be required to apply for one MaxisONE Share Line at RM48 a month to receive the free Galaxy S8; the MaxisONE Plan 188 allows up to 4 Share Lines. Each MaxisONE Share Line comes with 5GB of additional data that can be shared with all lines with DataPool, and unlimited calls.

This offer is only available at Maxis Stores nationwide, and not available at the Maxis Online Store. Naturally, customers will be bound by a 24-month contract, and existing device contract owners are ineligible for this offer. Check out the promotion page for more.

On Maxis’ online store, the P20 Pro in Twilight is currently available for purchase, but the listing shows that stocks for the colourway is limited. Maxis customers can purchase the P20 Pro with the telco’s Zerolution plan, or the MaxisONE plan 128, 158, or 188.

Interestingly, Maxis isn’t the only telco that is currently carrying the Twilight P20 Pro – Digi also has the colourway listed on its online store. However, unlike Maxis, Digi does not have the Twilight P20 Pro in stock at the moment.

Aside from the different colour, the P20 Pro in Twilight is just like the standard model. It still has a 6.1-inch Full HD+ display, a Kirin 970 chipset paired with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of non-expandable storage, and a large 4,000mAh battery. Of course, there’s also the impressive Leica triple-camera system and a 24MP front-facing shooter.

If you’re keen to purchase the Huawei P20 Pro Twilight from Maxis, you can do so on the telco’s online store. Do note that stocks for the Twilight model are limited, as pointed out by Maxis. To learn more about the P20 Pro itself, check out our comprehensive review of the phone.

According to twitter user @artid, the Maxis Customer Service center in KLCC is also currently down, and they have not be able to give an estimate on how long rectification works will take.

Update: Maxis has reached out to us and said that the issue has been resolved. According to a notice on the official Hotlink page, the company has rectified the problem and monitoring the situation for any unforeseen issues.

Maxis has introduced its new FamilyRoam plan, which enables all users subscribed to its MaxisONE Plan and MaxisONE Prime to take advantage of its new unlimited roaming plan in any one of nine ASEAN countries.

Specifically, the new roaming plan gives its users unlimited international calls and SMS, as well as unlimited use of the MaxisONE Plan or MaxisONE Prime’s shared data pool, no matter which ASEAN country you are in. Activating is also kept simple; only one user needs to activate the daily MaxisONE World pass (which still costs RM38 per day), after which anyone under the plan gains access to the same unlimited roaming privilege.

FamilyRoam is already in effect, and to be clear, the pass can be activated either by the principal line user or any shared line user. No additional sign-up is required.
