FIFA World Cup 2018 Telecast On RTM Channels Is Now Official: Featuring 28 Live Matches

The Communications and Multimedia Minister, Gobind Singh Deo today has revealed the full details regarding FIFA World Cup 2018 coverage on RTM’s free-to-air (FTA) channels. Among such information includes number of matches involved as well as the main sponsors behind the telecast.

While most of the information regarding the World Cup coverage by RTM have actually been revealed by the minister last month, the official launch of the coverage only took place earlier today. As a refresh, 41 out of 64 World Cup matches will be shown on RTM channels.

From these matches, 28 of them will be shown live while 13 more will be delivered as delayed telecast. Furthermore, 21 of the live matches will take place on TV1 while the rest can be viewed through TV2.

While Gobind has previously stated that the broadcast rights for the tournament alone would costs RTM around RM 30 million, the public broadcaster has managed to overcome the said costs in full with the help from two main sponsors. Specifically, Maxis who have contributed RM 18 million to the cause as well as another RM 12 million from AirAsia.

The minister also stated that there are indeed additional costs such as today’s launch event and other related events that might take place during the tournament but they are not substantial. Despite that, the minister still welcomes any parties out there to reach out directly to RTM if they are still interested to sponsor the World Cup coverage by the public broadcaster.

Meanwhile, do note that RTM’s World Cup coverage will not be available through TM’s unifi TV even though both TV1 and TV2 are part of the platform. This is due to the fact that RTM’s broadcast rights are meant only FTA broadcasters while unifi TV is an IPTV service.

It is quite clear that Maxis has caught football fever that is currently spreading throughout the world, thanks for FIFA World Cup 2018 that is going to start later today. Aside from becoming the main sponsor for the tournament’s telecast on RTM, the telco is also offering match passes for its postpaid and prepaid customers to enjoy them via Astro GO.

While Astro has actually introduced FIFA World Cup passes for Astro GO before, the pricing of the match pass that is being offered by Maxis is much lower.

Specifically, the telco’s World Cup pass for Astro GO is priced at RM 1 per match as opposed to Astro’s original pricing of RM 6. At the same time, the pass also comes with free data quota which means that Maxis or Hotlink customers general data quota will not be touched when they are watching World Cup matches through Astro GO.

However, customers need to purchase the pass at least 3 hours before the match begins. This can be done through MyMaxis, Hotlink RED, and Hotlink Flex mobile apps in which customers will then receive a code or link for them to redeem the match pass on Astro GO.

Aside from the World Cup match pass for Astro GO, Maxis has also released a separate Bola Raya app that features augmented reality stickers for users to enjoy. For further information, head on to Maxis’ official website.

Maxis just unveiled two new high speed fibre broadband plans with up to 65% lower prices. Set to commence from 13 September onwards, the new plans offer up to 100Mbps speed for only RM129 per month.

The telco company is offering two new consumer broadband plans: 30Mbps speed for merely RM89 per month, and 100Mbps for RM129. In comparison, Maxis’ most affordable broadband plan right now costs RM119 for only 10Mbps speed – that’s quite a huge price and speed differences.

Business users, on the other hand, can sign up for the 30Mbps plan for only RM99. As for the 100Mbps plan, it goes for RM139 – just slightly more over the consumer plans.

If you’re an existing user, worry not: you can still sign up for either one of these two plans. All you need to do is to fill up the form over here. New sign-ups would also need to fill up the form, and a Maxis representative will give you a call once that’s done.

However, before you sign up for Maxis’ new broadband plans, do note that they come with a 24-month contract. Terminating your subscription before the contract period ends will incur a RM500 penalty.

Maxis’ new high speed broadband plans are certainly enticing, and they will be available from 13 September onwards. To learn more and sign up for the new plans, head on to Maxis’ official site.

Aside from unveiling its latest high speed fibre broadband plans, Maxis also confirmed something particularly interesting. Turns out, the telco company is planning to offer broadband plans with up to 800Mbps speed in the future.

Maxis revealed this bit of info in the webpage for the new fibre broadband plans. In the FAQ section, Maxis wrote that it will offer “higher download speeds of 300/500/800Mbps” once the infrastructure is ready. Of course, no tentative date was given, and Maxis simply said to “stay tuned for the latest updates.”

On top of that, the company also said that these speed upgrades will be made available to all existing customers both in and out of contract.

Maxis’ new fibre broadband plans.

This is definitely good news for those who have been wanting for higher broadband speeds. Now that Maxis is offering up to 100Mbps speed for only RM129, there’s a very good chance the company’s upcoming 300Mbps and 500Mbps broadband plans will be priced competitively too.

Nonetheless, we can only wait for Maxis to reveal more information regarding these high speed broadband plans in the future. For the time being, we’ll have to make do with its new plans here.

Update 20 August, 10:10PM: Maxis has revised the FAQ section with new speeds – it was previously stated to be up to 500Mbps only. The article has been updated to reflect this.

Malaysia Finance Minister Says No Deductions On Prepaid Reloads

$

Starting from 1 September 2018, prepaid mobile users have had their reloads reduced in value by 6%, in accordance to the re-implementation of SST. Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, though, has instead assured users that they will receive the full amount that they paid for.

According to reports, Lim has stated during an SST briefing in Kota Kinabalu that he will be meeting with telco representatives next week to sort this matter out.

This is a technical issue which needs to be ironed out. We will find out why this is still happening,” Lim said.

He is also quoted as saying, in pretty certain terms, that “prepaid card buyers who purchase RM10 vouchers will get RM10 of mobile credit.” The minister added “the 6% SST should not be passed on to customers.”

Various telcos are offering various forms of rebates to make up for the differences in the value they get versus what they paid for. For example, Maxis is offering Hotlink and Ookyo users free call time minutes depending on the amount reloaded, but these free minutes must be used within 48 hours of reloading before they disappear.

Celcom’s XPAX users will get credit equal to the amount deducted for SST, but the reimbursed amount will only last for 24 hours if left unused. It’s much the same story with U Mobile, but the bonus credit you get is 10% of what you reloaded, instead of the 6% deducted.

If you’re a user of Yes 4G, then you’ll get extra data depending on your credit purchase.

While Digi did say on its FAQ page that your reloads will be affected by SST, it did not mention if the telco will reimburse you in any way like the others are doing.

This Is How Maxis Zerolution360 Can Help You Keep Up With Flagship Smartphones

$
0
0

As you might know, a top-tier smartphone such as the Samsung Galaxy Note series can easily cost more than RM 3000. However, its value doesn’t sustain over time though and would substantially depreciate especially once their successor comes into the market.

Case in point: the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which costs RM 3,999 at launch can now be obtained for as low as RM 2,499 just as its successor, the Galaxy Note 9 enters the market and that’s for a new unit. A used device would be valued at even less which means that you might have to fork out a substantial amount of money to upgrade to the next flagships even after you trade in your 2018 top-of-the-line model.

Not to forget, there is also a constant risk of accidental damages. While you can greatly mitigate the risk of phone damages by obtaining a good casing and screen protector but at times, even they are not able to save phone’s screen from being shattered or damaged by falls and liquid.

These damages are not exactly cheap to be repaired and in the worst case scenario, thousands of Ringgit investments on a flagship phone could vanish in a snap by having it stolen. Now, here comes Zerolution360 into the picture.

Zerolution360 is not your common installment plan.
It is an all-inclusive device leasing plan.

With Zerolution360, customers can obtain their dream flagship phone without the need to break their bank at the point of purchase. This is because they don’t have to pay thousands of Ringgit as upfront payment fee which is very common with most installment scheme out there.

Not only that, the monthly fee for Zerolution360 actually costs less than the other installment option by Maxis, Zerolution. Here is an example for the newly released Samsung Galaxy Note 9:

If that’s not enough, Zerolution360 also allow customers to switch their phone every year. Of course, there is an upgrade fee involved but then again, Maxis actually reduces this fee every quarter. The fee can even be waived altogether if customers hold on their phones for 24 months in which they can then move on to another flagship without the need to pay any upgrade fee.

Moving on might be tough especially when you find yourself become so attached to a very good device but when it comes to smartphones, nothing last forever. Aside from the depreciating value that we’ve mentioned earlier, every smartphone has its own lifespan and frankly speaking, there is no real reason to keep outdated phones around few years down the road unless you are a collector.

Zerolution360 comprehensive device protection scheme provides peace of mind.

The biggest difference that Zerolution360 has brought to the table as compared to other installment plan is its protection scheme. Even the Basic Coverage is already impressive enough with its immediate 1-fo-1 replacement regardless of whether customers’ phone was totaled or stolen. Maxis would even pick up customers’ broken phone and send it back to them once it has been repaired.

The Premium Coverage which costs additional RM 10 per month strengthen the deal even further as customers will be provided with loaner unit while they wait for their device to be repaired. However, it is likely that they don’t have to use the loan phone for long though since Premium Coverage customers will be able to receive their phone once again as fast as 24 hours or 2 hours if they need a full replacement.

The role of smartphones has changed so much these days that they not only help connect users to their friends and family but also other vital parts of their life: work schedule and emails, financial matters, transportation, and even food. Hence, the protection scheme provided by Maxis Zerolution360 which include quick service turnaround is quite a big deal as it is rather hard to get things done without a smartphone these days even just for a short while.

So, there you have it. Maxis Zerolution360 not only enables customers out there to obtain flagship smartphones easily but also provides an upgrade opportunity down the road as well as peace of mind through its comprehensive protection program. To learn more, just head on to Maxis official website.

OpenSignal Mobile Network Report for Oct 2018: Maxis Is Still The Leader

The network performance research company OpenSignal has recently released yet another report regarding the performance of mobile networks in Malaysia. It was based on the measurements that the company has collected from 1 June to 28 August using data from 233,257 test devices throughout the country.

It focused on several factors including download speed, upload speed, latency, and availability. With the exception of the availability factor, all of them involved 3G and 4G connections.

According to the report, Maxis is the overall leader out of the six mobile telcos that the company tested which also include Celcom, Digi, U Mobile, Unifi (previously Webe), and Yes. This is something that the telco has managed to achieve last year although Maxis still not able to achieve a clean sweep of all the categories within OpenSignal’s analysis.

Specifically, Maxis managed to edge out its competitors in terms of 4G download speed, upload speed, latency as well as overall speed. However, it shared the top spot for 3G download speed with Celcom while U Mobile apparently provides the best latency when it comes to 3G connection.

The 4G-exclusive Yes once again is the top of the chart when it comes to 4G availability at 92.91% but its worth to note that Celcom and Maxis are not that far behind as their 4G availability rating is more than 80%. To check out the report in detail, head on to OpenSignal website.

With the new generation of iPhones already announced, Maxis has opened up pre-orders for them all. And when it comes to options, the telco is pretty comprehensive.

Essentially, all three models of iPhones – the XS, XS Max and XR – can be pre-ordered via the standard plans, Zerolution and Zerolution360. And the plans available are the MaxisONE 128, MaxisONE 158 and MaxisONE 188 plans.

Below are the available pre-order permutations for all three iPhone models, starting with the iPhone XS:

And this is for the iPhone XS Max:

Finally, here are the permutations available for the iPhone XR:

When comparing the device prices, the price reductions compared to phones’ prices without a plan are nothing to scoff at. The Zerolution monthly payments would add up to a total that’s close to the original prices of the devices, but at least you’re not forking up a massive lump sum up front.

Maxis Launches Hotlink Rewards; Offers Chance To Win Free Flights Tickets

Maxis launched its new Hotlink Rewards program earlier today. The new rewards system is part of the telco’s prepaid service, and is designed to give Hotlink prepaid users with daily reward points and mystery gift.

As explained by Maxis, Hotlink prepaid users will be able to access the feature via its Hotlink RED app (which is downloadable via Google Play Store and the Apple Apps Store). Once downloaded, users only need to log into the app. Both to claim their daily reward points and see what their mystery gift is.

Regarding its reward points system; all users begin at the Silver level of the service. Each daily log-in to the RED app gifts users with five points. Upon collecting 60 points in total, users will then be bumped up to Gold level status. At which point, users at this level will gain double the number of Hotlink Rewards points.

Again, these points can be redeemed for a variety of services, rewards, or discounted deals from any of Maxis’ partner brands and merchants. In the case of Gold level users, Maxis sweetens the pot by throwing in the chance to win free flight tickets as a part of the mystery gift. On that note, it should be pointed out that winners of the flight tickets will limited to flying within Southeast Asia only, with the flight time and seating being chosen by the telco itself.

Like most things in life, there is a catch to Maxis’ new rewards scheme. In the spirit of fairness, Maxis will reset all the points you’ve earned at the start of every calendar month. Regardless of how many you’ve earned throughout the month. That means that points do not carry forward to the next month, and everyone will need to start again from Silver level.

The Hotlink Rewards program is already live. As mentioned, Hotlink prepaid users can access it via the Hotlink RED app. Some brands that have partnered up with Maxis for this program include McDonald’s, Shopee, Tealive, Expedia, Domino’s, Watsons, myNEWs.com, Agoda, MPH, and Fave. Among many others.

Maxis Fibre Is Facing Slowdown As Well; Might Be Resolved By 2AM (UPDATE)

UPDATE (1146pm): While we have yet to receive an official statement from Maxis, this statement from TM might able to provide some light on the issue.

ORIGINAL STORY (1048pm):

Looks like it is not a good day for ISPs in Malaysia today. As it turns out, TM is not the only one facing connection problem as reports regarding Maxis Fibre slowdown have poured in from all over the country.

While we are not sure when it started, reports from users on Lowyat.NET Forums suggested that the slowdown have might begin since this morning.

As opposed to TM though, Maxis admitted the problem quite early. Based on our quick search on Twitter, the first acknowledgment of the Maxis Fibre issue took place before 2:00 pm but several users on Lowyat.NET Forums have mentoned that they were having a problem reaching out to the company’s customer service.

Given how the service is using the same infrastructure as per TM, the current slowdown of both Maxis Fibre and Unifi, as well as Streamyx, might be related. An unconfirmed message that apparently originated from TM’s Network Operating Center and is now being circulated online might provide some picture of the situation:

According to some of the recent response by Maxis customer service staff on Twitter, the company estimated that the issue might be resolved by 2:00 am:

We are now reaching to Maxis for further clarifications. So, stay tuned.

Astro has announced that its IPTV customers that are utilizing the service through Maxis Fibre service will receive a speed upgrade for a lower monthly fee. The upgrade will begin from next month onwards, according to the official statement from the company.

Specifically, the existing customers with 10Mbps and 20Mbps plan will be upgraded to 30Mbps. Their monthly fee for Internet will also be lowered to RM 89.

Customers with 30Mbps line on another hand will also receive the price reduction at the same time but no upgrade will be done on their connection. However, they do have the option to move on to 100Mbps plan which will be offered starting from January 2019.

Astro Maxis IPTV current broadband monthly price, as on 19 November 2018.

If they choose to pick the 100Mbps option, they will receive a dual-band Wi-Fi router for free. While Astro is not able to confirm the pricing of the 100Mbps plan at the time this article is published, we predict that it is likely to be priced to RM 129 as per standard Maxis Fiber 100Mbps plan.

Do note that customers 24-months contract will be renewed if they choose to move to the Astro Maxis IPTV 100Mbps plan. While these speed upgrade and price reduction will only begin from next month onwards, new customers that just signed up from today onwards will also receive them.

At this moment, there is no update regarding a similar move for Astro IPTV customers that are on Time Internet even though the ISP has recently delivered a speed and pricing upgrade for general customers.

The New Hotlink Postpaid Flex Plus 60 Plan Offers Vivo Phones For As Low As RM 1

Hotlink has introduced a new plan under its Postpaid Flex family called the Flex Plus 60. Prior to this, there were already two Hotlink Postpaid Flex plans in the market including the Flex 40 and Flex 30.

Priced at RM 60 per month, customers would receive 10GB of Internet alongside unlimited calls and SMSes which were standard features for Hotlink Postpaid Flex plans. Additionally, they also can choose to add Unlimited Social, Unlimited Music, and Unlimited Chat packs into their plan for an additional fee.

Aside from the bigger data quota, another major factor that separates it from the previous Postpaid Flex plans is the fact that it is the only Postpaid Flex plan that offers phones. While there are only two models available with the plan, the price could be quite attractive to some customers out there.

For example, the vivo Y85 which currently priced at RM 899 is being offered through the plan for just RM 199. On another hand, there’s also the vivo Y81i which is being sold for RM 499 at the moment can be obtained alongside the Postpaid Flex Plus 60 plan for additional RM 1.

However, do note that these phones come with 24 months contract. To learn more, check out Hotlink’s official website or visit the nearest Maxis Store.

UPDATE (425PM):

Maxis has provided us with an official statement regarding this morning’s service outage in response to our inquiries earlier today.

The service outage in various parts of the country that was detected late last night was due to a technical fault during a power system upgrade at our data center. Within an hour of detection, we began to observe gradual restoration of services in some areas around the country, with all Enterprise services being restored fully, followed by mobile data services restored in stages

We would like to apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. Providing a seamless network experience to them has always remained a top priority, and we are committed to making sure that any unforeseeable disruption is resolved in the quickest time possible.

U Mobile Extends Its 3G Network Sharing Deal with Maxis Till June 2019

In late June 2017, it was revealed that U Mobile has decided to progressively terminate its 3G network sharing with Maxis after U Mobile decided to focus on its own network infrastructure. However, both telcos have revealed earlier today that the network sharing agreement between the two companies has now been extended.

Originally said to end on 28 December 2018, the deal’s new expiry date has now been set to 30 June 2019. That being said, U Mobile pointed out that the extension only involved certain areas although the company didn’t specifically point them out.

U Mobile further added that the telco has spent more than RM 5 billion on its new network infrastructure that was part of its network replacement exercise for the past 18 months. The exercise was done in order to take advantage to the additional spectrum slots within the 1800MHz and 900MHz bands that the telco has received from the government last year.

Currently, it is still not yet known when U Mobile will complete the replacement work on its network infrastructure although the telco has acknowledged that it is now already in the final roll-out phase. Given the extension of the telco’s deal with Maxis though, it is likely that the completion date will take place in June 2019 as well.

Through the scheme, gamers can get their hands on the device for as low as RM 101 per month (not inclusive of the MaxisONE plan monthly fee) as shown through the table below:

Gamers are also able to obtain Razer Phone through the standard MaxisONE contractual plan. Through this route, they are then able to purchase the device at prices that are lower than its standard RRP of RM 3449 as shown below:

Of course, all the tables above are just a brief look at what Maxis has for Razer Phone 2. For the complete details especially in terms of the exact amount that you need to fork out in order to make the gaming phone your own, head on to Maxis’ official website.

MCMC Network Performance Report 2018: All Wired Broadband Meet The Speed Standard Including Streamyx

Aside from wireless broadband, the Network Performance Report 2018 that was revealed by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) earlier today also includes wired broadband services. As per what we have noted earlier, the report was presented at its HQ to only a select group of media which doesn’t include us.

Nevertheless, the team at SoyaCincau who was present at the briefing was kind enough to share the presentation slides through its Twitter.

Based on the charts from MCMC, all fixed broadband services that the agency has tested from three providers including TM, Maxis, and Time have generally met the Mandatory Standards for Quality of Service (MSQoS) when it comes to speed. That even includes TM’s Streamyx and Maxis’ DSL services.

In fact, Streamyx and Maxis DSL services have actually surpassed last year’s rating as they apparently have managed to achieve 99.98% and 100% of the MSQoS. On another hand, unifi, and Time Fibre have seen a drop in rating as compared to 2017 although the drop might be minuscule. Maxis is the only company that managed to increase its rating for speed although once again, the changes don’t seem significant.

When it comes to latency though, TM’s Streamyx once again didn’t meet the standard just like in 2017. However, there was indeed some improvements in Streamyx’s latency rating although this also applies to other fixed broadband services as well.

In order to come out with these figures, MCMC stated that the data collection took place from January to December 2018 through 200 fixed broadband locations throughout Malaysia. It goes without saying that the agency will continue doing these tests to keep the players in check and protect consumers.
